The visa-free transit policy for foreigners refers to one of the visa-free systems
implemented by countries around the world. It means that when foreigners travel from one country to a third country via the transit country in accordance with the laws or relevant regulations of the transit country, they do not need to apply for a visa of the transit country and are allowed to stay for a short period in the transit country. This policy has been in effect since July 1, 2013. As of July 2019, a total of 71 countries (regions) have implemented visa-free or visa-on-arrival policies for Chinese citizens holding ordinary passports. At present, 34 open ports in 15 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) of China, including Beijing and Shanghai, have implemented a 144-hour visa-free transit policy. Citizens of 54 countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, holding valid international travel documents such as ordinary passports and connecting tickets to a third country (region), can handle visa-free transit procedures at the ports when transiting through China. Visa-free stay within the designated area shall not exceed 144 hours. Thanks to the continuous expansion of the 144-hour visa-free transit policy, more and more foreigners are visiting China and sharing what they see and hear online. It has presented a true and vivid image of China to the outside world and promoted China's foreign economic and trade cooperation.
