The visa-free transit policy for foreigners refers to one of the visa-free systems
implemented by countries around the world. It means that when foreigners travel from one country to a third country via the transit country in accordance with the laws or relevant regulations of the transit country, they do not need to apply for a visa of the transit country and are allowed to stay for a short period in the transit country. This policy has been in effect since July 1, 2013. As of July 2019, a total of 71 countries (regions) have implemented visa-free or visa-on-arrival policies for Chinese citizens holding ordinary passports. At present, 34 open ports in 15 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) of China, including Beijing and Shanghai, have implemented a 144-hour visa-free transit policy.
